French as a foreign language course

Description

At Paris School of Technology & Management PSTM, we welcome students wishing to start or continue their learning of French. These courses give students an opportunity to acquire the basics and master the tools essential for any training or activity planned in France or in a French-speaking country. The teaching method is the communicative approach: the student is active, he must learn to communicate.
The number of students is reduced (15 students per class on average) and all aspects of the language are worked on: oral and written comprehension, oral expression and pronunciation, written expression and grammar, socio-cultural aspects.

Proposed levels

Six skill levels have been defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. At school, we teach French from level A1 to level C1. In France, level B2 is required to be able to enroll in university.

PSTM

Our goals:

  • Allow students to quickly and efficiently acquire the linguistic and cultural means to be autonomous in France or in a French-speaking country.
  • Encourage spontaneous speaking, help them express their opinion, make them react to everyday situations or social phenomena.
  • Provide linguistic support and socio-cultural references in order to answer questions that may concern learners during their stay.

Our method

Our method is based on the communicative approach and the action-oriented approach. We use recent and harmonized textbooks on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Our teachers also use authentic documents (articles, announcements, audiovisual documents, etc.) in order to provide everyday cultural references and to create original projects. For better monitoring, we favor classes with a maximum number of 20 students. Among the most used textbooks (non-exhaustive list):

Our assessment

When you arrive at school, you must take an orientation test which will determine your level and direct you to one of the existing groups A1, A2, B1, B2 or C1.

When you join a group, you will be allowed to take stock of your skills and knowledge acquired during the training. In addition, you will take regular evaluations (once a month) to attest to your progress. At the end of your registration period, you will be given a certificate of level and course follow-up.

DELF and TCF

Our courses also allow you to prepare for official certifications such as DELF or TCF. DELF and TCF are official certifications allowing you to validate your language level. If you obtain level B2, you can take a university course or enroll in a higher school in France. You can get used to these exams by taking the mock DELF exams as part of our courses (non-official DELF exam). If demand is high, we can also open a specific module to prepare for these exams.

Workshops and cultural practices

Learners are also invited to take workshops in addition to their weekly lessons. These workshops are highly recommended to facilitate the administrative procedures for renewing a residence permit with the prefecture.

The workshops are offered for 1 hour 30 minutes each and correspond to a particular skill and a grouping of levels. The schedule of these workshops varies according to the demand and availability of the learners, but they take place during the week from Monday to Thursday and in the afternoon. Friday afternoon is devoted to cultural practices: linguistic exchanges, thematic evenings, cultural outings.

We will perform the following tasks there:

* phonetics and oral comprehension;
* conversation (French culture and society);
* intercultural expressions (arts, socio-cultural approach and guided tours)
* work on written skills: comprehension, production, grammar, vocabulary, etc. ;
* specific DELF preparation on request;
* help with personal work and administrative procedures.

The levels defined by the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)

For each level, you will find brochures at reception which describe precisely the content and objectives pursued. You will also find practical information there (websites, bookstores, etc.)
